Weymouth thrash title rivals Met Police

WEYMOUTH 4

Odubade 14, Goodship 30, 90+4 pen, Thomson 68

MET POLICE 0

TWO brilliant efforts from Yemi Odubade and Ben Thomson starred in a professional 4-0 win for Weymouth in their crunch Evo-Stik Southern Premier South clash against title rivals Met Police.

Brandon Goodship scored the other two with a well-placed effort and a last-minute penalty as the Terras stormed to victory.

The result sees Weymouth five points clear at the top of the table with a goal difference seven better than nearest rival Taunton Town.

There were two changes for Weymouth, as Jordan Ngalo and Cameron Murray came in for Ashley Wells and Josh Carmichael.

The match started off slowly with neither side crafting much of an advantage in the opening minutes.

Odubade had the first real chance of note when good work from Abdulai Baggie and Thomson saw the former cross in, but Odubade’s shot was weak and easily cleared.

The opening goal came in spectacular fashion after 14 minutes.

A throw-in deep inside the Met Police half found its way to Odubade on the corner of the box, who whipped a shot in off the post to rapturous applause.

Thomson then saw a shot from a similar angle curl over the bar.

Met Police tried to reply through a couple of deep free-kicks and a shot off target.

However, they did not look like seriously threatening Weymouth goalkeeper Tom McHale at this stage.

The Terras would deservedly add to their tally not long after.

A classy, long move forward found Goodship inside the box, who slid a well-placed effort past Berti Schotteri in the Met Police goal.

The Met began to pressure the Terras, looking better going forward after Weymouth went 2-0 up and should have had a goal to make it 2-1 after 36 minutes.

Firstly, a dangerous free-kick in was ably dealt with by the home side’s defence, but the visitors were able to craft a corner from a recycled ball.

The corner was then swung in and a header flew in which McHale punched out only as far as Oliver Robinson, who headed over the bar.

Baggie again proved a threat, crossing a ball in towards Odubade in the Met Police box.

Ethan Chislett had the last meaningful moment of the half when he curled an effort wide of the Weymouth post before the half-time whistle blew shortly after.

Met Police started the half well and began stringing together spells of possession.

Yet their only efforts resulting from this would be hit over the bar, one a header from a corner and the other from an ambitious bicycle kick.

Any doubts about how seriously the home fans were taking this would have been swiftly dispelled when Josh Webb gave away a corner by a misplaced pass back to loud cheers from the home crowd.

The Terras then had a great opportunity when a good corner routine made its way to Thomson who lifted the ball high and wide.

After 61 minutes, it took a well-timed tackle to deprive the Met Police’s Jack Mazzone of the ball inside the box when well-placed.

Murray was then on the receiving end when the ball was pulled back to him and he aimed a good effort from 25 yards out but Schotteri did well to save.

Yet there would be another added and it was another wonderful effort.

A great move forward found Thomson 25 yards out who slammed a brilliant, and very powerful, effort into the corner of the net to make it 3-0 to the home side.

At this point the visitors looked a beaten side, with the prolific Jack Mazzone coming off for Mickel Platt not long after.

Brooks went close with an effort after another flowing move forward but his effort was straight at Schotteri.

Baggie nearly added a goal late on, before Goodship notched a penalty in the final minute of injury time to make it 4-0 to Weymouth.

Weymouth host the already-relegated Staines Town on Saturday, while the Met Police travel to fellow top-three side Taunton.
