Mark Molesley ‘could not be any prouder’ of Travers

WEYMOUTH boss Mark Molesley said he ‘could not be any prouder’ of Mark Travers, after the ex-Terras’ loanee put in a man of the match performance in Bournemouth’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Travers was making his premier league debut just 16 months after last featuring for Weymouth at Gosport Borough, his final game in his loan spell during the first months of the 2017/18 season.

Molesley, who is also assistant manager of the Bournemouth under-23s said that the Terras should be proud at having had a role in his journey.

Molesley said: “I could not be any prouder at the moment.

“Weymouth should be so proud that they played a part in his progress and showed what a goalkeeper he is, a fantastic performance from him.

“And for me personally, I got to see him on that journey and he has got all the tools and he showed that (against Spurs) and a great day, a great day for us, a great day for him and you have got to celebrate these moments in football.”

Travers made a string of brilliant saves to keep Tottenham at bay, before the sending offs of Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth for Spurs saw an easier second half for Travers.

There was a late threat but Travers claimed the clean sheet and the man of the match award on his Premier League debut.

Travers impressed on debut for Weymouth, scoring a brilliant long-distance winning goal against Bishop’s Stortford in August 2017.

Molesley added: “A league win (against Kettering Town, to become crowned Evo-Stik Southern League champions) and then one of my boys at Bournemouth starring in the Premier League so I am a happy man.”

So impressed have the Republic of Ireland bosses been with Travers’ displays he has been named in their squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Denmark in June.

Elsewhere, the winners of the Weymouth FC Claret and Blue lottery April draw are: Karen McCulloch from Warwickshire, Kevin Burns from Birmingham, Colin Huckle from Weymouth.
