WEYMOUTH captain Jake McCarthy has extended his Terras contract to secure his future at the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League champions.

The ever-present skipper saw his side to promotion to the National League South, scoring four goals in the league and a further three in cup competitions.

McCarthy joins boss Mark Molesley, striker Ben Thomson, midfielders Jordan Ngalo and Cameron Murray, plus defenders Stephane Zubar and Calvin Brooks in committing to the Terras.

Speaking to Echosport, Weymouth director of football Paul Maitland admitted McCarthy’s deal was a “no-brainer”.

He said: “We’re pleased to have been able to extend his contract. He’s had a good level of consistency over the past few years in the amounts of games he’s played.

“After an extremely succession season we’re pleased to have got him tied up. We look forward to life in the National League South where we think he’ll get better again and we’d like to think he’ll thrive in that league as well.

“It was a no-brainer for us to offer him the extension and he was happy to do that as well. It fits in with his life and the directions he’s looking to take.

“It was a good fit for everyone so we’re pleased to have finally got it ratified by the FA.”

Maitland added: “He’s a good character, he absolutely loves football. You’ve got to love it to enjoy the work ethic that we have.

“He’s done very well since he arrived in a Weymouth shirt. It’s great that we’re able to make sure he joins us into the third year of his spell with us.

“Hopefully he’ll have a big impact next season.”

The former AFC Bournemouth academy midfielder originally the Terras back in May 2017, before leading the Terras to fifth with 97 points in the league and an eventual 3-0 defeat to King’s Lynn Town in the play-offs, before achieving promotion in his second year at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
