ASHLEY Wells has committed to Weymouth for the forthcoming 2019/20 National League South season.

Speaking to Echosport, Director of Football Paul Maitland praised him as ‘Mr Weymouth’, and said that he did not think the fans would have forgiven them if Weymouth had not kept Wells at the club.

The club captain celebrated his 300th appearance for the Terras during the 3-2 win at Hendon during the season just gone, and will now feature in their National League South campaign.

Maitland said: “He is club captain, just completed 300 appearances for the club, he is Mr Weymouth, I don’t think the fans would have forgiven us if we hadn’t kept Ash at the club.

“He is deserving as any player to have a crack at the National League South, he has done very well for Weymouth and we are pleased that he is staying on board and that he is going to join us on a new adventure.

“He is 100 per cent Weymouth through and through, you know what you are going to get with Ash, he will never let you down, he wears his heart on his sleeve and there is no reason why he can’t make the transition from Southern League to National League South.

“He is a good, experienced player now and he adds real value to the playing squad on and off the pitch.

“We are delighted that we have been able to agree terms with him.”

Wells originally signed for the club in February 2012 from Portland United and made his debut a month later, in a 1-0 loss at home to Hemel Hempstead.
