ASHLEY Wells described his decision to stay at Weymouth as a no brainer, after it was announced he has extended his stay with the Terras on Wednesday.

Wells, who has been with the club for seven years and is club captain, also spoke of the ‘great feeling’ of being able to put the club back in the National League South.

Wells told Echosport: “Obviously I am over the moon, it is seven years that I have been at Weymouth.

“It is a great feeling.”

When asked if it was an easy decision, Wells added: “There were a few little things that had to get sorted out but as soon as they offer you something, well for me anyway I have been there so long, I get on with everyone there, the fans like me, it was a no brainer once Mose (Weymouth boss Mark Molesley) says he wants you it is pretty much where do you sign?”

The club captain’s 300th appearance for the Terras came as a substitute during the 3-2 win at Hendon during last season, which proved successful in achieving promotion to the National League South.

Discussing the upcoming season in the sixth tier, Wells said: “It is a new challenge for all of us, some of the boys have been on loan to the league above but it is something new for a lot of us and it has been a long time coming for Weymouth, we have been in the Southern Prem for a while, trying so hard to get out of it, almost getting relegated a few times, so to put the club back in the Conference South is a great feeling.

Wells is pleased to see so many others sign on, with the full list, at time of writing, reading: Ben Thomson, Mark Molesley, Jordan Ngalo, Calvin Brooks, Stephane Zubar, Cameron Murray, Jake McCarthy, Josh Wakefield and Wells.

Wells said: “Seeing the players that helped win the league stick together, you know we are a very close-knit group, we all get on very well so to see those boys sign on it is very good.

“You know you are going to be playing with the same players, you know how they play you know their strengths and weaknesses and we cover each other.

“Winning the league you are going to be able to keep a lot of the players together, they all want that fresh challenge of how we will do in the league above.”

Wells now aims to keep notching up his appearances and admits there is a target in mind.

Wells said: “I have been here a few years so just keep ticking them off, seeing how many I can get, last season I made my 300th appearance so just keep trying to notch up my appearances.

“There is an appearance target in mind but that will depend on how long Weymouth decide to keep me and how my body reacts to playing football over the next couple of years.”
