Weymouth run ends after Boro battle
GOSPORT BOROUGH 3
McAllister 9, Lanahan 57, Pennery 81
WEYMOUTH saw their terrific unbeaten home run in the league come to an end after goals from Craig McAllister, Sam Lanahan and Ryan Pennery condemned them to a 3-1 defeat in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.
The Terras had recovered well to going a goal down and pressured the visitors but never found their stride after Lanahan’s 57th minute goal.
Weymouth made just the one change, as Abdulai Baggie recovered from a knock sustained in the Dorset Senior Cup win over Dorchester to replace Josh Carmichael.
Gosport had the opening chance when ex-Terra Pat Suraci crossed into the box but Stephane Zubar was able to dribble away, yet was fouled in the process allowing the Terras to clear.
Soon after, there were a couple of corners for Weymouth but both could not be converted into a meaningful chance.
However, Weymouth kept possession and came back at Gosport, before Brandon Goodship received the ball outside the box but his effort was high and wide.
Boro manager McAllister was leading from the front quite literally for Gosport, and he put his side ahead with a brilliant strike just beyond the palms of Weymouth goalkeeper Jordan Seabright from 25 yards out.
The Terras tried to respond through efforts around the edge of the box from Ben Thomson and Calvin Brooks, but both were straight down the throat of Gosport goalkeeper Patrick O’Flaherty.
It looked like Weymouth would equalise after 21 minutes.
Jake McCarthy threaded in a ball to Brooks out wide, who pulled it back across successfully to Goodship, but he slipped while taking the shot from near the penalty spot.
After 30 minutes, Weymouth should have equalised.
Thomson latched onto a loose pass back, muscled the defender off the ball and fired in, yet it rebounded off the post with the goalkeeper stranded but Yemi Odubade’s seemingly goalbound shot was cleared off the line.
Suraci was then shown a yellow card for bringing down Goodship, who was bearing down on the box.
The visitors’ great start had fizzled out by this point and it increasingly felt a case of when the home side would equalise and not if.
Goodship then tried to play in Odubade but his pass was too close to O’Flaherty.
Weymouth levelled through Odubade however, who slotted in a Brooks cross after 43 minutes.
Shortly after, the Terras nearly went ahead through Zubar, who narrowly failed to turn in a cross.
Early on in the second half it seemed Weymouth had continued where they left off, as Callum Buckley slipped in Odubade out wide but inside the box, and Gosport were able to clear.
The link-up play in attack was gelling excellently as Weymouth were encamped in the Gosport half.
Despite this, it was Gosport who went in front after 57 minutes.
Zubar saw a yellow card for stopping a counter attack by fouling a player, yet from the free-kick Gosport went ahead again.
The ball was crossed in and rebounded to Lanahan on the edge of the box who fired a first-time strike into the bottom corner after 57 minutes.
Weymouth again tried to respond but seemed disjointed after the goal, with McCarthy’s firm but well-wide effort from 25 yards out the only real chance in the early stages after the goal.
Buckley had to be on hand to prevent a third goal for Gosport, as a counter saw the ball fired in from the edge of the box, only for Buckley to block it off the line.
Zubar then lashed in a shot from 30 yards out from a wide angle, which was well off target for the home side.
Seabright had to be alert to kick the ball away from Gosport substitute Pennery who almost latched onto a ball near the edge of the box.
Moments later George Bennett forced Seabright in to a superb stop as Weymouth were struggling to find their consistency.
Pennery then fired in a tame effort from 25 yards out which slipped through Seabright’s grasp.
Odubade went close late on but the Terras fell to their first league defeat at home since October 24, last year, 411 days apart.
