THE Terras’ first test in this season’s FA Trophy proved a comfortable one, as they breezed past struggling Wantage Town.

In a dominant display from the hosts at the Bob Lucas Stadium, in truth, they probably could have had a few more than the four goals they ended up getting, against a Wantage outfit that were forced to finish the game a man light through injury.

The Terras went into the game without loan recruits Bradley Tarbuck and Stuart Fleetwood, looking to avoid a huge upset against a side that was yet to win a league game in the Southern League South & West Division this season – a level below the hosts.

Weymouth boss Jason Matthews, who enjoyed one of his more quiet games in a Terras’ shirt, once again named himself in goal and there was a surprise inclusion for Conor Jevon in the Weymouth starting XI.

With Ben Thomson still injured and Sam Jordan still struggling, former Poole Borough man Jevon featured alongside skipper Stewart Yetton up front. Jordan Copp was also handed a start on the wing.

And it was Jevon who should have opened the scoring on three minutes.

After Copp’s searching ball forward, Dan Smith burst through and stood the ball up for Jevon from the right, but the young striker somehow headed wide from seven yards out unchallenged.

But it did not take too much longer for Jevon to get his name on the scoresheet as he notched the opener on 10 minutes.

After Calvin Brooks surged forward from centre-half, the ball eventually fell to Jevon, who almost shanked a volley which dropped in off the inside of the post and foxed a static Eddie Cavanagh in the Wantage goal.

That sparked a flurry of chances for the home side as they dominated throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Yetton almost capitalised on a goalkeeping error and could have had another when he squandered an opportunity after latching on to a neat reverse pass from Copp.

Dean Evans then teed up Jake Wannell after a corner but the full-back blazed over the stand and Copp then turned provider for Billy Lowes, whose sweetly struck effort fizzed just past the post.

Just past the half hour mark, some controversy ensued as Weymouth thought they had a second.

Yetton’s initial header was turned away by keeper Cavanagh and Copp struck at goal on the follow-up, with the gloveman diving at his near post in a bid to thwart the secondary effort.

The referee’s assistant judged the ball had not crossed the line despite the winger’s huge appeal.

A second then came however as Yetton got in on the act to put the Terras well in the ascendancy.

He raced through and, despite initially looking for some support from a team-mate, he decided to go it alone and smashed the ball into the top corner.

Following the break, the home side looked to extend their lead and put the tie beyond doubt.

Copp smashed wide at the near post on the angle and, after a neat piece of skill from Jevon, Lowes chipped the ball over the Wantage bar.

Evans then came within inches of adding his name to the scoresheet. He produced a dipping shot which rattled the woodwork after good work from Dan Smith and Mark Cooper – Jevon headed the follow-up over.

Former Paulton man Evans was not to be denied however, as he stabbed home from a corner after Cavanagh flapped at a set-piece on 54 minutes to make it 3-0.

It was then 4-0 just seven minutes later as Jevon was allowed all the time in the world to head in his second after a cross from the right.

Wantage’s Sam Brown then picked up a nasty injury and was stretchered off, meaning the away side had to finish the contest with 10 men.

Keeper Cavanagh then let his frustration boil over.

After the referee gave a corner to the Terras, he smashed the ball away in a moment of protest where he, quite simply, lost his head and earned a booking.

Jevon, who was given the man of the match award by the game’s sponsors, then squandered a late chance to record a hat-trick but it was not to matter, as the Terras progressed to the next round of the Trophy with ease.
