WEYMOUTH’S Jake McCarthy acknowledges the Terras are going into this season as ‘one of the favourites, if not the favourites’ but says the side are confident for their Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division campaign.

The Terras start away at Harrow Borough as they look to follow up a season where they finished fifth with 97 points, and lost 3-0 in the play-off semi-final to King’s Lynn Town.

When asked what the mood in the camp is like, McCarthy said: “The mood is very confident going into the season.

“I think after last season where we just missed out, no one really knew who we were or expected us to do well whereas now this season we are going in as one of the favourites if not the favourites to get promoted.

“So there is a bit more pressure on us in that sense but the mood in the camp, everyone is really positive and looking forward to getting the season going.”

McCarthy insisted that any pressure however, would come from themselves.

McCarthy said: “I think the only real pressure we put is on our own performances if we are not up to standard but we know that when the season comes we will be ready to go.

“We have had a lot of pre-season games where we have mixed around a few players, mixed around a few formations but as soon as the season comes and that whistle blows we will be ready.”

The league has faced heavy restructuring, meaning the Terras face less long distance journeys to places such as King’s Lynn and closer opponents such as Taunton Town and Salisbury.

When asked about it McCarthy said: “It is good for the players.

“Travelling that far and then getting off the coach and playing it is tough so getting the games a lot closer and having the league restructured is definitely a benefit for us 100 per cent.”
