Weymouth sink Swans in routine victory

WEYMOUTH 4

Goodship 10, 19, 53, 83

STAINES TOWN 0

BRANDON Goodship plundered four goals as Weymouth coasted to a straightforward 4-0 victory over Staines Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

The result, combined with the Met Police’s 3-1 victory over Taunton Town, means that Weymouth can be crowned champions next Saturday at Beaconsfield Town should they win and other results go their way.

It was not a classic encounter, Weymouth saw numerous gilt-edged chances go begging and rarely looked threatened by their opponents.

Goodship’s quartet also means he is two shy of his 38 league strikes last season.

There was just one change for Weymouth, as Josh Wakefield replaced Stephane Zubar.

Brennan Camp made his first appearance in a Weymouth squad since signing on loan from AFC Bournemouth, while Jack Martin took his place on the bench in place of Mark Childs.

It took just 28 seconds for Weymouth to nearly score, when Calvin Brooks got forward and aimed a shot from a tight angle that trickled wide with Staines goalkeeper Louis Dixon beaten.

Weymouth dominated the early stages but were struggling to find their feet, with final passes going astray or being defended.

A shot from just outside the box went wide from Goodship but it would not be long before he found his aim.

After 10 minutes, on yet another Weymouth attack, Goodship picked up the ball centrally on the edge of the area and whipped a shot past Dixon and into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Thomson then almost made it 2-0 three minutes later but his shot was well-saved by Dixon, who tipped it narrowly over the bar.

Yemi Odubade then pulled the ball back for Goodship who fired over the bar.

The closest the Swans went at this point was Alexander Yearwood being offside from a long ball forward.

Thomson then burst forward down the left and went down under a challenge from Harry Agombar to earn a penalty.

Agombar earned a yellow card and Goodship doubled the visitors’ misery by firing into the right-hand corner despite Dixon diving the correct way.

It was all very one-sided and after the goal Staines looked a very beaten team.

Jordan Ngalo was given the freedom of the Bob Lucas Stadium to run forward into the box but eventually the Staines defence woke up and cleared the ball away.

The chances were lining up for Weymouth though.

Thomson headed wide from just four yards out before Goodship failed to get the ball from underneath his feet.

The visitors had to make an early change with Robby Mete Badolo Labonza injured and was replaced by Jack Torbett.

Staines then had their first real chance when Matthew Bremford was through on goal out wide, but Sam Sherring came back to make the challenge to allow Weymouth to clear.

Bremford was subsequently cautioned for a foul on Sherring.

Further chances came as Goodship slid the ball wide with Dixon beaten, to which the crowd audibly winced in response.

Baggie pulled a teasing ball across the box that could not be tapped in by a waiting Weymouth player.

Weymouth could not add to their score as despite their chances, they did not seem to be out of second gear.

The second half started where Weymouth left off, with Wakefield curling a corner in towards Sherring, who nodded towards the bottom corner but Dixon somehow got down to save.

Dixon was not quite so lucky later however, when his goal-kick took a deflection off Thomson and the ball made its way to Goodship who easily fired in for his hat-trick after 53 minutes.

Wakefield then lifted a ball over to Brooks who leaped and hit the ball over the bar.

Staines were managing to threaten as a good move forward came to Bremford, who hit the ball over the bar.

Weymouth’s attack became more stunted as the half went on and found chances harder to come by, yet Goodship added a fourth after 83 minutes to wrap up the match.
